First principles assessment of ideal fracture energies of materials with mobile impurities: implications for hydrogen embrittlement of metals
نویسندگان
چکیده
We propose that the ideal fracture energy of a material with mobile bulk impurities can be obtained within the framework of a Born-Haber thermodynamic cycle. We show that such a definition has the advantage of initial and final states at equilibrium, connected by well-defined and measurable energetic quantities, which can also be calculated from first principles. Using this approach, we calculate the ideal fracture energy of metals (Fe and Al) in the presence of varying amounts of hydrogen, using periodic density functional theory. We find that the metal ideal fracture energy decreases almost linearly with increasing hydrogen coverage, dropping by 45% at one-half monolayer of hydrogen, indicating a substantial reduction of metal crystal cohesion in the presence of hydrogen atoms and providing some insight into the cohesion-reduction mechanism of hydrogen embrittlement in metals. 2004 Acta Materialia Inc. Hydrogen embrittlement of grain boundaries in nickel: an atomistic study
The chemomechanical degradation of metals by hydrogen is widely observed, but not clearly understood at the atomic scale. Here we report an atomistic study of hydrogen embrittlement of grain boundaries in nickel. All the possible interstitial hydrogen sites at a given grain boundary are identified by a powerful geometrical approach of division of grain boundary via polyhedral packing units of a...

The effects of boron and sulfur impurities on the ideal cleavage fracture properties of Ni3Al under tensile stress are investigated using the full-potential linear-muffin-tin-orbital total-energy method, with a repeated slab arrangement of atoms simulating an isolated cleavage plane. Results for the stress-strain relationship, ideal cleavage energies, ideal yield stress and strains with and wit...

Theories, experimental results and applications associated with hydrogen behavior in amorphous metals and alloys are reviewed. An emphasis is made on the potential use of these advanced materials for hydrogen storage technology. Therefore, several properties that are especially relevant for such applications are assessed. متن کاملSulfur-induced embrittlement of nickel: a first-principles study
We study the embrittlement of Ni due to the presence of S impurities, considering their effect in the bulk and at grain boundaries (GBs). For bulk Ni, we employ Rice’s theory based on generalized-stacking-fault energetics and the unstable stacking energy criterion. We use first-principles density-functionaltheory calculations to determine the ductility parameter D = γs/γus, the ratio of the sur...
متن کاملHydrogen-related defects and the role of metal additives in the kinetics of complex hydrides: A first-principles study
We report first-principles studies of hydrogen-related point defects and impurities in LiBH4 and Li4BN3H10, two promising materials for hydrogen storage. In both systems, hydrogen vacancies and interstitials are found to be positively or negatively charged, and hence their formation energies are Fermi-level dependent. One can therefore tailor the formation energies of these point defects hence ...
